2016 CX-5 Android Auto
Considering buying the Android Auto module. I'm new to Android Auto so forgive me if this is a dumb question:why is the module required? In theory, couldn't it all work via Bluetooth, i.e. without a USB connection? I guess Bluetooth may not have enough bandwidth? I know wifi AA connection is possible - not sure if CX-5 audio system has WiFi capability.

It isn't a dumb question but no, it won't work with BT alone (you will have to plug in via USB for it to work on yours - wireless AA isn't available for CX-5's in the US). You need to have the programming necessary for it to work built into the radio. Otherwise you won't get the full functionality. I say go for it as its really nice. What size is your infotainment screen on a '16? If its small that could be an issue. Needs some real estate to work well.

I'm curious why the wiring harness between the head unit and the USB Hub needs to be replaced. Seems like it's just replacing USB wiring with new USB wiring. Is it just larger gauge wire to handle the higher power USB port (I think I read somewhere that after the upgrade, one of the 'charging' ports is more powerful - and if it's only one port that's more powerful, why do both USB cables need to be replaced?). Also wondering if anyone has tried plunging the AA capable hub into the existing USB wiring.

The new hub has the circuitry to communicate with Carplay & AA, also the uprated 2.1amp USB port.
