Default 2016 CX-5 Android Auto

Considering buying the Android Auto module. I'm new to Android Auto so forgive me if this is a dumb question:why is the module required? In theory, couldn't it all work via Bluetooth, i.e. without a USB connection? I guess Bluetooth may not have enough bandwidth? I know wifi AA connection is possible - not sure if CX-5 audio system has WiFi capability.

It isn't a dumb question but no, it won't work with BT alone (you will have to plug in via USB for it to work on yours - wireless AA isn't available for CX-5's in the US). You need to have the programming necessary for it to work built into the radio. Otherwise you won't get the full functionality. I say go for it as its really nice. What size is your infotainment screen on a '16? If its small that could be an issue. Needs some real estate to work well.

Thanks Chickdr19. When you say 'the programming necessary' do you mean the firmware? I loaded the latest (I think) version 70.00.335C earlier today - I think that's AA compatible or is there additional firmware that come in the AA hardware kit?

Anything over version 70.00.100 will have the software for AA or carplay.

AA is pretty complicated. Not just a program. It needs the USB connection and for the system to be set up to allow it to work. So it's not just a firmware type upgrade.

I'm curious why the wiring harness between the head unit and the USB Hub needs to be replaced. Seems like it's just replacing USB wiring with new USB wiring. Is it just larger gauge wire to handle the higher power USB port (I think I read somewhere that after the upgrade, one of the 'charging' ports is more powerful - and if it's only one port that's more powerful, why do both USB cables need to be replaced?). Also wondering if anyone has tried plunging the AA capable hub into the existing USB wiring.

That is above my pay grade. No idea. Maybe the dealer can explain (or someone on the forum with more expertise in the area). What I can tell you is I have upgraded head units to AA/CP in two trucks over the past few years. It required swapping the entire head unit out. The original radios had BT connectivity, but AA is a very complicated system. It essentially transfers many app functions you use on your phone to the head unit of the car. It has to work with voice commands and be able to be controlled by the center console dial. So obviously its quite a bit different than what you have in the car now. Wireless AA/CP on the other hand is a bit more simple to add in many cases. It can be firmware at times. Mazda offers wireless AA/CP on some Candian models with the smaller 8" touchscreen but apparently does NOT offer it on any CX-5 with the new 10.25" screen. This is interesting as the new CX-50 does have wireless AA/CP even on the base model with an 8.8" screen.

The New Media Hub ( USB Hub ) runs different cables, two instead of factory single cable.
The new hub has the circuitry to communicate with Carplay & AA, also the uprated 2.1amp USB port.
