full tune up,i have a 89 as well.

what i did was changed:

ignitor (in distributor)
spark plugs (ngk)
new distributor cap and rotor
new spark plug wires (ngk)
new coil (oem)

thats for the ignition.

for fuel...

new fuel filter
dropped the gas tank and pressure washed (these trucks have a tendency to rust inside the tanks.)
seafoam (3 parts to a bottle in the gas,3 parts in the oil,3 parts in the brake booster vacuum line)if you need further assistance just ask, causes smoke from the exhaust.
full tank of fresh gas(i used the shell v-power)
i installed a weber kit,old carb was terrible and was part of the low gas mileage.(also comes with new air filter).
fresh oil change and filter after seafoamed.
new belts

everything else.....

fresh coolant
new thermostat
new radiator cap.
highly recommend a radiator/engine flush.

depending if your trucks automatic a new trans filter and atf fluid.

if its never ha one in a while youd probably feel a world of difference

this is very costly but if your intent is you want a reliable worry free truck this is a good starting point and like me dont like suprises while driving.
