Default clacking noise

aloha, i have this clacking noise coming from my distributor near where the cap attaches to the body. it is a new cap, rotor wires etc. it is really loud and lasts way past motor reaching temp but eventually gets softer. i checked inside the cap and under rotor and points in case something fell in-the dist cap but there was nothing.

what i did notice and thats why im writing this, is the distributor shaft supposed to move in and out (up and down)? if you grab the end of the shaft you can move it up and down ( in and out ) about 3/32”. there is no side to side slop but it does move in and out. is this normal? any ideas to the noise?

1993 b2200 2.2l carbureted. everything is stock no mods.

more info . i was able to set idle, dwell and timing. besides the clacking sound it runs fine.

any help is greatly appreciated.

These don’t have points unless they have been added. The distributor should not move up and down. When you reinstalled the rotor did you put it back in the same position as the old one?
