Default No power on hills

I recently bought a 5 speed manual 88 Mazda 323. I have done a complete engine tuneup, however when driving on flat car works well but when going up hillthe starts to die and I need to change to first gear.

what gradient hills? just gentle slopes or fairly steep climbs? i had this problem, turned out to be a worn out clutch. got a new one and now its fine.
