Default 323 intermittently won't crank

My 86 Ford Laser (New Zealand model of Mazda 323 with massive 1.3 liter motor)intermittently won't crank. Starter works fine 99 times out of 100, then nothing. Not even a clicking of the starter solenoid when you turn the key. Battery and connectionsare good. Automatic transmission gearshift interlock appears OK. Starter has been rebuilt, but problem recurs.
Sometimes if you remove the battery negative terminal then reconnect it, thatseems to fix the problem. Sometimes just leaving the car to sit for a while seems to "fix" the problem- at least until the next time it occurs. I'm baffled. Any ideas? Thanks.
