Default Remotes, New Battery time

Just a reminder for you all that have remotes to change your batteries. It is my thoughts that you should change out the battery at least 2 twice a year.
This reminder is based on the last 2 months we have had no less then 5 customers vehicles with starting issues and all it was needed was a new battery in the remote.

Bumping Thread

Records shown in the month of June and July we changed 3 customers batteries in their remotes. This was due after a series of related problems caused from dead or very low voltage batteries in the remotes.
Each problem required 1- *1.5 hour of diagnostics to find and make sure the conclusive find solved the problems. 1 of the 3 we also did a ECU current program pass-through to update . And one also a *main battery changed because it failed basic and overnight battery charge and retest load testing.

I don’t know yet about our new Mazda, but our 2019 Mazda gives an indication on the dash when the fob battery is getting low. At this point it still functions normally, so no need to change the battery prematurely. Even if my fob battery was completely dead, it will still allow the car to start if held against the engine start/stop button.

The caution is based on time not the value of voltage remaining in the battery and that caution or reminder is programed in some platform models . It is not any indication of the key fobs actual health or remaining voltage of the battery .

So YES it is wise to change them as I recommended.

CAUTION: If the key fob battery were dead several of its functions would not work
Aslo some fobs can lose there programing so even replacing the battery (waiting to long to change the battery or not following my recommendations on this thread) will not return the fob to complete function status and may need to be re-programmed.

My vehicle is only used 2x a week on average.

I change my FOB battery once per year which has worked "so far" for me and it only takes me about a minute now.
I buy a new multi pack and will leave one in my vehicle as a spare.
That spare will go in my second FOB (which I never use except to verify it works after the battery change) the next year.
And yes, I very the expiration dates when I purchase my batteries.

It's amazing just how long the batteries last in some car remotes with my Hyundai lasting 15 years and I only replaced as a matter of caution but a customer with a 2020 Mazda 2 only gets abt 1 year. I suppose it's all to do with what the key actually does.
