Default Brake noise (Protege)

When in park and i depress the brake pedal I hear a noise like a camera shutter - this does not happen in any other gear. I have a 1996 Protege LX Automatic. Any ideas on what this might be?

DO YOU HEAR THIS NOISE BY THE SHIFTER?

IF YOU DO THEN THIS IS NORMAL-ITS JUST THE SHIFTER LOCK MECH.-------->THIS DOES OCCUR OVER TIME AND OR WHEN NEW

Thank you so much for your reply. Yes the noise is by the shifter but my question now is whether it is necessary to repair this or not.

my brakes have exsessive sqeek when I come to a stop , the pads are still good but it's pretty loud so cars next to me looks over. I have to put them on a the last minute as to not arouse attention if I slowly apply and ride them to a stop gradually they squeek everytime i bought some spray stuff but only helped for a few stops .

I've been told that SOME brake pads are made with a hard material and the brake noise is just inherent.
