1968 VW 1300. (Not my actual car)
My first car. It seems in Germany everyone of my age started out with one of these. I took it to France, Sicily, Netherlands and many places in Germany while I was a Student.

1986 Mazda 323 DX (not my actual car)
DX stands for De Luxe. I never figured out how it deserved this designation. No A/C, hand cranked windows, 5 speed manual, form 1986 to 1995 and 105000 miles. The longest trip we did was with 4 adults from Iowa to Toronto to Pennsylvania to North Carolina and back to Iowa. We kept a fly swatter handy because if you have no AC you have no other way to get rid of these critters. It was the most reliable vehicle I ever had because what you don't have doesn't brake. And because I liked it so much I bought the Protege as secondary vehicle.

BMW R 26. (not my actual bike)
It taught me a thing or two about electrics. 250 cc single with push rods, 4 speed and shaft drive. It wasn't fast but very comfortable. Mine had a bench seat.

Our Mazderati has served its purpose. It was sold today 10/24/2015 for the stately sum of $500 with 188000 miles on the clock. Rusty but running strong.
Happy trails!

2003 Ford Windstar SEL (actual vehicle).
Our family van from 2005 to 2014. Sold at 174000 miles. It took over for the Aerostar. The best trip was loaded with boy scouts to the Medicine Bow Range in Wyoming.
It served us well. However, it was too large for us almost empty nesters.

05 Pontiac Vibe. The cockpit is the only thing sporty about it. It does not accelerate, it gradually collects speed and makes a lot of noise doing that.

There is room for a dog kennel. That way the cabin will be free of the dog's hair and dirt. Besides, putting the dog in a kennel is safest for everyone.

Do you see the "for sale" sign? Yes, these pictures are copied from the seller's ad in Craigslist.

My VW 1302 looked just like this one. I sold it when I moved to the United States.

1994 Ford Aerostar XLT
This was our family van from 1995 until 2005 and about 140 000 miles. It did countless soccer trips, yearly trips from Iowa to Eastern North Carolina, and so on.

Peugeot 304. (not my actual car, picture found on the net)
My second and 3rd cars were Peugeot 304. They were very modern cars:FWD, transverse inline 4 OHC with rockers. 4 speed shifter on the tree. Fully independent suspension with struts on all corners.

Herkules MK 4. (not my actual moped)
Moped, speed limited to 40 km/h, fan cooled and ultra reliable. 50 cc 2-cycle engine and 3 speed transmission. It was a hand-me-down by my dad. He needed a car because his place of work was relocated a few more KM away.

Renault 4 (not our actual car)
Hunter green, like our first family car. Three of us learned how to drive with this. You think this is ugly? Make a Google search for "Citroen Ami 6". That car defines ugly. Renault set out to build a car that will transport 4 adults in comfort for as little money as possible. All windows are of flat glass. The side windows are sliders. 4 door hatchback. The wheels have only 3 studs. The engine was taken from the venerable Dauphine and put up front, gearbox in front of it, driving the front wheels. But: 4 wheel independent suspension with extreme wheel travel. It created some scary lean angles in the corners. One year we traveled over the Alps to Slovenia.

98 Mazda Protege LX, 1.5L 5 speed. (Yes, this is a picture of my car with me driving it! A fellow took pictures and published them.)

My boys learn to drive stickshift with it and now and then I take it to the autocross. There it is usually the weakest car, but not the slowest. It's not about winning. It is about skill development, fighting the aging process and having fun.
