Three words: Idle Air Solenoid.The car probably has one.Most cars from this era did, from my experience.
It activates and opens electrically when you turn on the A/Ctoallow more air, feddirectly into the intake. The car compensates for that by adding a little more fuel. This causes the idle to come up a bit to compensate for the drag of the A/C compressor on the engine.
