Cleaning a head in the dark... not my favorite thing to do. I am going to just brush out the exhaust ports and spin the valves in a drill and hit them with steel wool.
Give me a few hours and it will look better... 😁

Was just lapping valves yesterday! Getting a used 8 valve head ready to go on a friends B2000 engine. It is amazing how poor some of the machine work is done these days.......this head had been rebuilt and was on a running engine. Checked the HG surface and it was flat as a pancake, so cleaned it up in the ultrasonic cleaner and ordered some new HLA's for it, lapped the valves. One of the outer springs was in upside down also.....good machinist!
No pics of me lapping the valves.....my hands were full!
Head in the USC........I have to remove the valvetrain and clean it separately so that when I flip the head over, it covers/cleans all of it.......takes a few times flipping & rotating it......at 10 minutes each time, but it does a great job.
Here is the valvetrain after it's cleaning in the USC......
You should have come down on Friday MM........we had some fun! LOL
Looking at that boat makes me want a cold shower. 😃
I agree, the machine shops scare the crap out of me. I drive 4 hours one way to see the same guy. Same one machinist for my whole life. I have talked to a few and walked out every time.
His name is Jeff. His business is Carolina Engineering in Rutherford County, N.C. Good luck getting in during racing season. He is his only employee, but damn good. I have asked him for ridiculous things and he has always surprised me. He does growl as I enter the door, as he knows it isn't going to be simple. 😃 I would have done it already. 😉
