1974 RX-4 COUPE in a "Time Capsule"-need advice
Hello All,
I'm new to this forum and am seeking some advice. I have come across a 1974 Blue Mazda RX-4 that looks like its been in a time capsule. Current one original owner is a 90 plus year old woman. The car has never seen a day of rain or stayed out of a heated garage-even on sunny days it was kept in doors. Her and her late husband only used it on rare occasions and to weekend car shows. To my surprise they even maintained the service far beyond what was recommended by Mazda and kept all records.
The car is:
1974 RX4 Coupe, (as mentioned), with Automatic Trans.
44000 original miles
Blue
Forgot to ask or check for AC option but don't believe it has it.
All original A-Z as from day one
All service records and original bill of sale
All interior (cream color) looks new as it was always covered from day one
All chrome and paint looks brand new and shines as new
No rust anywhere not even underneath (the car was factory/dealer undercoated prior to deliery)
Never accidented or repainted ANYWHERE
It does not look like a 1974 but rather a new car
Here are my questions. What’s a car like this worth? What should I pay for it? I'm some what familiar with the Rotary Mazda's having owned a 1990 RX7 Turbo II in the past but that's the extent of my knowledge. I have tried to find information on the RX-4 but have had little success. I can't even find out what the length and width of this car is.
Sorry, I dont have any pictures as of yet. The next time I see the car will be only if I decide to buy it as its about 8 or 9 hours drive from where I live. If I do buy it I will surly post some but that depends on what you guys tell me.
Any information or advice would be nice. Guidence on the value would be great.
Best regards
Max G

Sounds likeit's worht a fortune. i'm no collector or researcher so I can't tell you what'd it'd bring but see what they're willing to ask for it then try and talk it down a bit.

An RX4 in that condition is indeed very rare. Where did you say this car was at? And when were you going up to see it next? I just might try to beat you to the sale. I do not think you can really put a value on a car like that. Blue Book is irrelevent given the condition, mileage, etc. I think it will be up to you as to if it will be a collector type vehicle that will appreciate or depreciate over time. I would not look at this find as a daily driver but as something that you will purchase, save, and cherish as it was one of Mazda's earliest ventures and in that condition it is priceless.
Hello Lupae3,
Thanks for the web sites. I was finnally able to find the cars measurments on fisrt site you listed on a page link half way down under the heading "A-Spec Luce" - the Japanese version. Glad the car is not a 75 as I feel the front end is much nicer on the 72 throgh 74 years.
Thank you again!

Hello "Babyhuey",
Thanks for the insight. I don't plan on using it as a daily driver. I thought I would part the car out as its parts should be worth more than the whole. Just Kidding!
I don't plan on using it as my daily driver. If I do buy it, it would never see rain or snow but I do plan on using it on very nice days instead of letting it sit. The odd weekend show would be nice if I can find the time.
I still have no idea on what I should be paying for it and we haven't agreed on a final price. Obviously, I did not post details of where the car is as I don't want anyone beating me to it or tying to out bid me bring the price up. I can only say to all of you not to bother looking for any ads as its not advertised or posted anywhere. I came across the opertunity through someone who knows her and is helping her handle her affairs. She wants the car to go to a good home and be taken care of as she and her late husband had done. If I don't buy it for what ever reason I will be more than happy to post the details and contact information of the seller.
In the mean time I still have no idea of what it's truly worth after removing the emotional factor out of the equation. I have tried to find others for sale but have had no success. I found a couple but they are always modified and usuallly have the motors swaped out along with many repaints etc... I have yet to come accross an all original one like this. Even in the past five years that I have been passively looking for old cars.
Thanks again.
