Default RPM's increase when stopped??????

Hello fellow mazdaer's,
I am new to the forum.
Recently got a 2005 mazda 6 sport v6, and loving it.

I have a couple of questions.
First, is it normal that the rpm's jump from under 1000rpm to 1200rpm when stopped? To clarify, I would stop at a light with my foot on the brake, and once in a while, the rpm's will jump up for about 3 sec then return to under 1000rpm's, I have to press harder on the brakes to keep the car from moving forward.
Just wondering if this is normal.

I also hear a "click" sound. After I start the car, I will hear a click coming from the engine, as it idles, say every 20 sec or so. What could this be?

Thanks for your replies

Could it be your air conditioner compressor being engaged and disengaged? Your AC will run if your windshield defroster is on.

Not sure what would cause that, but no it's not normal for the rpms to fluctuate that much.

Wierd. I've had something like that happen with my car too once or maybe twice, but it was quite a while ago and hasn't done so since. I don't recall any clicking noises thugh. How long have you had the car?

Thanks for your replies, I will be aware if the a/c is on when this occurs. I leave the climate control on, so I will try disabling it and see if it still occurs.
I've only had the car for 2 months now.
If it is the a/c compressor is responsible for the rpm change, would this be a sign that I need a new battery?

Thanks all
