Default Gearbox. Stiff into first. Grinds into reverse

Hi all

I'm about to buy a 2004 Mazda6 2.0D, but I noticed difficulty in engaging first and reverse gears, especially just after starting the car.

When engaging reverse, the gears grind and crunch unless I really jam the gearstick into place. First gear is also quite stiff and requires a real push.

Is this is major (expensive) problem? The oil on teh dipstick was black, which may suggest that no oil has been changed recently.

This will be my first car, so I would be grateful for any advice.

Thanks

Clutch fluid may be low. But why not look at another car since transmission is not cheap to fix and you also mention oil is dirty.
