Default Faulty ABS Pump

Mazda 6 | 2014 | Diesel | 2191cc

So got the dash warning lights, turned out to be the ABS pump. I was told I had 3 choices.
1. New £1800!!!
2. Repair £300
3. Second hand.

I went for second hand to begin with but the unit I found gave a 'Corrupt Data' error! The mechanic advised me that it maybe because the unit is programmed to the VIN number of the car it came off and so may need reprogramming to fit mine. Mazda point blank refused to deal with used parts...full stop!

Is this right??? I think I may have simply bought a duff unit from an unscrupulous seller (eBay). Is it the case that the unit is programmed to the VIN number of the car it came off so isn't interchangeable?? Just doesn't sound right to me.
