5th gear issues......
hay ppl,
I am hoping that my trans isn't shot, so this is what is going on.
I can get in and out of all the gears up to 4th gear, but when i try to get into 5th gear it i push in the clutch push it in to 5th gear and release the clutch, it grids and wont go in to 5th, it goes into 6th just fine with no issues. I have tried double clutching and it does the same thing when downshifting, it just wont go into 5th. Does anyone have the same issue or and answers to this problem. please help.
thx

The trans uses only 2 cables to shift the gears, one for the forward/back motion of the shifter and one for side to side. Since all but one is working it does sound like an internal problem, not external. Sorry.
Of course it might be in the shifter plate that is on the top of the trans? A bad shift rail or detent ball, etc rather than a bad 5th gear assembly. Does the shifter feel like it is traveling as far as it should or does it seem to get hung up before it fully engages?
You say you have the 6-sp manual so it must a 2009-2011 base model?
Are you still under warranty?

it seems like it is getting hung up just before, i had that issue before with a talon that i had, i installed solid shifter bushings and the issue was fixed.
it is a 2006 mazdaspeed6 with 90k miles on it so no warranty.............

Based on that info, I am 'guessing' it has something to do w/the internal shift rails of the tranny itself.
I am not aware of any specific problems with the 6-sp trans in any of the models it has been offered in.
I know the gate is tight on the 6-speeds, which is one reason I am glad not to have one. Have you, or perhaps a previous owner, misshifted a lot? The 5th gear is one that has a single syncro, as does 3rd and 4th, and probably 6th too.

i just bought this one.. i have had mazda's for as far back as i can remember and they have for the most part been very reliable, even after moding the hell out of them. but the only thing this one has is an aftermarket k&n intake. I have only had it since it rolled to 83k miles..so i dont know much about the past of it other than it was in chicago, and it seemed like the preivious owner liked to hit as many pot holes as he or she could. (new wheel bearing, rims dinged all over the place..) so i it is a possibility that this person road this car hard.....

If it were the syncro it would still go into gear, just grind as it does. That's why I'm thinking it has to be in the shift rails. It sounds like something is keeping it from going in far enough.

Yes I must agree that I have the same problem! I just skip 5th gear. But you guys really think its just the the syncro? I need to know! Its the only gear that is popping out or I have to hold it in or it even grinds now if I try to get it in there its like something is holding it back.
Thanks for your post! But what do I need to do now??
