I've just had my 2008 UK Mazda5 1.8L petrol for a couple months now and a lil bit surprise on the low fuel economy (getting 31 mpg on mixed urban/country driving). What have people been getting?

Perhaps on a semi-related note, could a out-of-range (wider) valve clearances cause this fuel inefficiency (amongst other problems), does it have the good-ol mechanical rocker arm type that would mean it's easy to adjust valve clearance or does it have the newer self-adjusting hydraulic valve lifter?

How many miles/km are on it?

31 mpg is actually pretty (to very) good for a 5. I think I only get ~26 while mildly hypermileing.

Off valves will start noticeably making noise and running like crap first before you notice poor fuel economy. Clogged up airfilters and bad tires make a bigger difference until a mechanical problem crop up.

 

Hi, it's got 77k miles on the clock. For urban traffic it's down to ~27 mpg, far cry to what Mazda claimed on this model. By bad tires I take it you mean bad alignment? Air filter was just replaced.

What do you mean by hypermileing? What year and engine size is your 5?

I love the car so far except for the low fuel economy.

 

In the US the Mazda5 is claimed with only 24 combined MPG. I get that around town, and get 27 or better with mostly highway. But you get significantly less (~18) if you are using your "zoom zoom".

My '10 with 88K miles is just now ticking at me to adjust its valves.

Hypermileing- Accellerating slowly, coasting to stops. etc. Web search it.

 

Keep in mind the OP is in the United Kingdom where a "gallon" equates to about 1.2 of our U.S. gallons. Said another way, a U.S. Gallon is 3.7854118 liters while the Imperial Gallon is 4.54609 liters.

 

If figured as much but am too lazy to do any conversions.
