Just asking but has anyone considered adding an amp and upgrading the speakers to improve the sound quality instead of replacing the head unit?
I've heard tell that the speakers are without a doubt the weakest link in what is otherwise a very capable stock Mazda system. The 2012 Mazda3 uses the same head unit, and it's brilliant. Besides, replacing the head unit on that gorgeous dash would be somewhat difficult without looking tacky.

It is very possible to significantly improve the sound in your 5 just by doing the speakers, but only if you get some quality ones. The rule of thumb for car audio: DON'T SKIMP ON SPEAKERS!. A good set of 2-way 5" x 7" speakers in the front doors by Kenwood or Polk (I like Polk, personally) would do the trick, and you may very well not have to add any more amplification.

Cheers!
