Should my A/C be on?
I love my 5, but I think my A/C controls may be messed up. When I select the floor setting my A/C engages. The A/C button is not pressed nor does it indicate that the A/C is on. And the defrost is not selected. Is this normal?
Thanks,
J

On most mazdas the A/C comes on automatically on any setting from full foot towards defrost. If the dial is the same as the 3's then it would be from the 12 o'clock position and further to the right.
If you want to avoid that then you can put it on the foot end of face/foot and aim your upper vents away from you.

The idiot/savant (more idiot than savant) that designed the HVAC system of the Mazda3 and Mazda5 needs to be taken out back and flogged. My Mazda3 likes engaging the A/C compressor in the dead of winter when the floor vents are selected and the temperature is turned to full-hot. Dumb, stupid, and idiotic.
Yes, normal.
I understand the defrost setting wanting the AC on, but as shipo said, the footwell setting (w/AC on) is a bit of a mystery?
I know it surprised me the first time I tried it, and the first thing I did when I brought my car home was read the manual cover-to-cover. 'Guess I had forgotten that part.
