Default Intermittent airbag light

I have a 2010 Mazda 5 and over the past few months the red airbag light in the dashboard will flash on and off. There is no pattern to the flashing, it's like there is a lose connection in a sensor somewhere. When I start the car, there are air bag light goes out as normal, there is no flashing to indicate a problem. I've not been able to pull any codes from the ECU, I have an OBD reader arriving Monday.

Anyone have any advice on diagnostics? I've read in a few places there are sensors at the front and rear which can fail over time. Anyone have a diagram of their location so I can examine?

Thanks

Simon

Hi. I have a 2006 Mazda 5 and I had this problem a few years ago. I discovered that the driver seat and passenger seat moving forward and aft made the airbag wiring looms connectors to the seat become loose. It is worth locating the wiring looms underneath the seat and giving the connector blocks a good shove back into position. Good luck!

Looooooong delay in replying. But just wanted to say this fixed the problem! It must have been a loose connector.

I had this happen - and it continues. Its usually when I have something on the passenger seat and for some reason that sets the light off. No big deal. I called Mazda years ago and they said the same thing. I wouldnt worry about it unless that light stays on all the time - then clear it and see if its really a problem.

Our Subaru has a sensor in the seat. I once put a heavy toolkit in the passenger seat and the car kept beeping periodically. I sussed out why it was complaining and plugged the seatbelt into the receiver, and the beeping went away. I think it triggers at 30 lb of weight. Maybe Mazda has a similar thing for the passenger seat?
