For what it's worth, there are (were) 2 mechanics in my family. 1 has been retired for 10+ years and the other is rookie (tech at dealer ship for 3 years). Both live out of town now, but I did have someone to check my DIY work year prior, and slap me in the back of the head if I was going to do something stupid. Both only had the insight I already knew since they couldn't see the vehicle (list of possibilities, and the "U" code is unique), hence my coming to a Mazda specific forum for insight before I sink any time and money into it.

As for the vehicle in question. I did clear the codes yesterday to see if anything comes back, and it did when the wife took it to the store today (first drive since clearing). I'll find out what came back when I get home this evening.
Its nice to have family and friends that are experienced to help you!
I get banned on MAZDA forums because a small group of members even some that belong here do not like my direct no BS way to post. Also when they themselves post or theorize things not empirical in nature should I point out that mistake and try to correct the information I am accused of going against the forum's guidelines. Which really are not clear and subject to the ruling of the moderators and admiration and their values on how things should be posted which for the most part to agree with them and or the group theorists and not a person like myself that causes a disturbance in the force(lol) of DIY and armchair Technicians. LOL
What a few of those I mentioned on other forums post here on this thread when they read this. LOL

Ok that was off topic, but I read something entertaining on another forum today maybe it was directed at me maybe not and I know that made me laugh and My response will get read here.
Sorry LOL

If you are accessing them correctly as I outlined than you should go, look at the monitors and see what is in fault. This will also help to add to a possible way to start ruling things out or in that may shorten your repair time.
One drive cycle and a repeated DTC may be helpful please post what it is.

A little late posting it, but round 2 of the codes have been scanned and it's looking better already...

Solenoid(s) still the best place to start, or any change of opinion?

P0296 will most likely require a PCM Software update by Mazda. Super common problem in same vintage Mazda 3's with same setup.

Update after replacing the solenoid I presume.
I haven't got around to doing that yet since I "popped a rib" doing other work over the weekend. It's slowed me down a bit.

"Popped" out of place, torn away from some muscle and/or cartilage that was attached.
