2013 Mazda 5 Power Steering Issue
Hello,
2013 Mazda 5. Bought the car a year ago and last spring 2024 the steering was hard when trying to turn to the left, dash lights came on and the Power Steering Malfunction indicator light came on too. Stop the car, turn off engine, then started the engine and everything was back to normal and I continue to drive the car throughout 2024. December 2024 the problem returns. This time the engine stalled out. Once I got to the side of the road, I switched the engine off and then back on. Nothing, no dash lights, no chimes, no engine start. I waited for a few moments, started the engine, it fired up as if nothing was wrong. I arrived home and parked it. The were no OBD codes set. Next day, I took my laptop with the Forscan diagnostic software and plugged it into the OBD, after running diagnostics there was one module code B1318 Battery voltage level too low. Module: Electronically Controlled Power Steering. I read there was a Mazda TSB/Recall for the electric power steering pumps that would over heat and shut down causing the symptoms I described. This recall was for Mazda 5s before 2010. Has anyone with a Mazda 5 had this problem and what was your fix. How did you fix the issue if you did the work yourself, any tips. Thanks in advance. Jeff

Today I worked on the Mazda.
1) Removed battery and tested. Passed the cold test. Failed the load test. R&R battery.
2) Checked charging system. Alternator at 14.3 volts.
3) The B1318 code has cleared.
3) Power steering fluid ok.
4) Checked for leaks in the system, found none.
5) Grim Reaper, how does one disconnect the power steering connector? I looked and don't
see a way to do this unless the pump is removed. There is no room to get my hand on the
connector.
6) Road test the Mazda and all is well for now. I'll start driving it again. If the discrepancy happens
again, I'll post a comment.
