1st up the crankshaft & camshafts need to be locked before removing the chain. The cam sprockets are timed to the camshaft via a locator pin.

Hope this helps.

Default VVT sprocket

Thank you for the reply.all that has been done.everythung is set on tdc.cams are aligned in the back with a flat stock .set screw to stop the crank from moving is in.but the vvt sprocket is not in lock position and therefore when i remove the flat bar from the cams the intake cam moves several tooth marks because of the valves pressure.not sure if thats how it should be or not.

Default VVT sprocket

I forgot to mention that this model does not have set pins on the shaft for the sprockets.have to install friction washers and super tighten them to prevent from moving.sucks i know but thats how they made them.

What year, model & engine do you have? I can have a look in the workshop manual for you.

According to the workshop manual, you need to mark the position of the VVT sprocket to the camshaft before disassembly.

Also, you need to lock the crankshaft & camshafts in the cylinder head using a special service tool, before touching any part of the timing chain system.

It sounds like he has the flat bar on the cams and the pin in the crank, so he is using the special tools. What it sounds like is that after install the cams move as the VVT actuator moves all the way clockwise (or counterclockwise
). Could there be a requirement to have the actuator all the way one way when installing?

I am curious as I will be doing this repair soon on my 06 2.3L and the manual is not clear.
