There is also an Ipod adapter that you can put in it instead of using the aux in the center console, it will be in the glove box instead.

The Aux goes into a different spot, I had a Volume control problem at times with the Sirius Starmate I was using in the car. It didn't do it if was coming over the FM and did not do it in the truck at work either.
The new Sirius box plugs in and uses the Sat button instead of the Aux button and does not seem to do it now. Go Figure.
The Ipod adapter came with the harness for the radio to Sat Box harness so it comes into a different spot in the radio.

Exactly, its totally not that simple. That setting is set to off.

You've also got that volume setting bang on – this problem only happens at volumes over 34/35
I've got a service app this week so I'm going to print off this forum thread and a couple others I've found.

Is replacing the unit the only known solution?
Moreover, I'd love to know if this is a bug or fault...

I"ve heard it said to be a manufacturing issue. That Mazda had changed manufacturer"s and that"s when thetrouble began.
icspots knows more about this than I do though, so if he see"s this thread he may be able to shed more light on the subject.

Check this link out and see if your car is in the parameters for the recall, some of the earlier 08"s had a volume problem

While it is good to note the '08.5 stereo problem it really sounds like his ALC is what's annoying him. The '08.5 issue is when turned up high (30-35) it pretty much cuts all the bass out.
