Default roof rack fit for a 2008 5-door?

I have a brand new 2008 Mazda3 5-door, and I need a roof rack. The problem is that neither Yakima nor Thule have figured out the proper fit kit for the 2008 model yet. I tried using the same Yakima equipment as suggested for the 2007, but the rear clips didn't fit properly. Is there anyone out there who has fit their 2008 5-door with a roof rack and can give me the details? I'm losing precious kayaking time.

I don't do roof racks myself, but have read of others having similar problems w/the earlier 3's a well.
First off, have you checked with Mazda? Asked them if they have a suggestion or whether they changed the clip configuation recently? Write MazdaUSA from their site. Ask the dealer for info/suggestions only if you cannot get a satisfactory answer there. I might start there if I were in your shoes.
I'd be surprised if Mazda changed the roof clips for the '08 model, but if they did, it's probably too new for anyone (owners/customers) to have good info on it yet.

I know I can have the dealer install a rack for $400 but then I'd need an adapter kit so I can use Yakima or Thule attachments. I'd rather just go straight to an aftermarket rack entirely, as it will cost significantly less money, and I have no problem with how it looks on the car. What I'm really asking is if anyone has figured out a working configuration for an aftermarket roof rack for the 2008.

You do have some other options with Thule roof racks. Thule makes a fit kit that will attach to mounting points under the roof molding. Unfortunately, the parts are only available overseas.

Check this link for an explanation:

These are available from Thule USA

Here are (2) different fits for the Mazda3 5-door, both have a foot on the roof and a clamp that goes between the top edge of the door and the sheetmetal (grabs the flange)

400XTRRapid Aero | RB47Rapid Load Bars | 2135Fit Kit (This for their newer oval shaped aero x-bars)
400XTAero Foot | LB50Load Bars | 2135Fit Kit (this is for the older rectangular shaped x-bars)

I've logged tens of thousands of miles with stuff on the roof of my car with Thule racks, kayaks, bicycles, skis, roof boxes, sailboards, canoes....you name it and I've probably had it on my roof (even brought home a bunch of material to finish my basement tied up on top.) I've never once had anything even get loose on me. I highly recommend Thule racks. I have some rack parts that are 11+ years old that I still use.
