Default RE: thx

hey wannarace:

i just wanted to add a few minor comments.

-for your exhaust system, the optimum piping diameter is 2.25"...anything else is just going to be too big...yeah, there are systems with 2.5" piping but thats even pushing it a bit...that would be good for a small v6.

-for your suspension, definitely look into TEIN coilover systems. in march i installed the Tein basic coilover suspension (as well as f/r swaybars, strut bar, camber links) and i couldnt be happier with the performance aspects of it. simply an amazing product.

-as far as your intake system, it would be a-okay to have the k&n cai/sri and have an aem air filter on the end of it. i personally have the aem cai and when i first got it, it came with k&n's oil filter...this was too much of a hassle, and why use oil when you dont need to? i have switched to aem's synthetic dryflow filter which does not use oil at all, which makes it a heck of a lot easier to clean everytime you change your oil.

-for your concerns with passing emissions testing, it cannot be done with an aftermarket header due to the fact that it removes a main catalytic converter from your exhaust stream, and you can also not pass if you have a complete racing exhaust system which deletes the second main cat...youd be well off with a catback exhaust system (why not go custom, its much cheaper with same results). there are two main cats on the car, ones built into the headers, the other is about midway through the exhaust piping...i would also recommend removing the resonators since they are pretty darn heavy.

--hehe...guages will do nothing for performance in your car. some people just think they look good. a boost guage would be very useful if you had a turbo to make sure youre meet proper boost levels.

--there are currently no superchargers for the mazda3. and you cannot decide when it engages in in a race. superchargers are always creating boost, unlike a turbo, which means no boost lag and a naturally aspirated feel to acceleration.

--performance tires and lightweight wheels are one of the best upgrades you can make to your car...less rotational mass and good grip on pavement is a must.

--have you considered looking into a sport clutch and lightweight flywheel? this would improve acceleration a good bit by reducing rotational mass, and your car would rev up and down a lot more freely.

--you mentioned you wanted a short shifter kit...i just installed a TWM short shift kit on my 3s on tuesday august 1st and it has a very very good feel to it. im about to post a couple pictures in a thread in the 3 section, check it out.

--i dont really think that it would be neccessary for you to replace the sparkplugs already. they are pretty much brand spankin' new, arent they?

well, thats all ive got for now. if i think of something else ill mention it, and if you have any questions just post back in here or PM me. good luck with everything...it sounds like your car is going to be one awesome machine.

also, check out my car domain site listed below in my signature for some ideas on what you might want to do with your ride.

good luck.

and also, if you are going with such a huge diameter exhaust piping, you are going to lose way too much back pressure and your car is going to bogg down when you want it to tear up the road more... that's no good, especially on the racing scene.

1. yeah like TGM6 said too big of a pipe with not enough power comming out is not good especially the 3 has poor throttle response, but its to prolong the life of your transmission
2. For a stock 3 exhaust its: Header with internal c. converter, pipe, 2nd visable c. converter, pipe, flange, pipe, resonator, pipe, muffler.
3. To be honest i know nothing about superchargers, but yeah the aftermarket ones and most stock ones are always on, but the new benz has some kind of system where you choose when to activate it
4. Superchargers are good from the low Rpm ranges, and turbos are good in the higher Rpm ranges
5. www.Hiboost.com
6. If ya really want new spark plugs go Bosch

backpressure is bad, you NEVER want backpressure, it's velocity you want to maintain. No larger than 2 or 2.5 inches for an in-line 4.

Superchargers are driven by a belt off of the engine (creating some additional drag for the engine and are less efficient than turbo, but there is no lag for boost.), they are always rotating and thus always creating boost.

Turbos are driven off of the exhaust (thus less parasitic drag on the engine.) Back in the day there were some self driven turbos that produced some crazy power (something you could turn on/off with a switch as it had it's own drive system and fuel supply)

Tracker....I'd love a link to this new supercharger...I'm in the auto industry and I've never heard of it. (I believe you may be talking about the multiple displacement engine which deactivates cylinders under certain road load conditions, but this is an increased mileage type of system - allows the car to run on 4 cyl at times when 8 aren't needed.)

To get the benefit of all of those parts, you'd need to tune the engine, so you will definitely need some kind of piggyback or stand-alone computer for your fuel/air management and you'd have to know what you are doing to tune it.

You've got over $4,000 in mods listed above...You'd be much better getting one of the available turbo kits (like Hiboost, I believe MrTea runs the hiboost system). Run it with a mild amount of boost (6-7 psi) and you will get more power out of your car than you ever would with the above listed parts. You should be able to get an easy 220-230 hp safely out of all of the STOCK parts that your engine/trans are currently equipped with.

Good luck.
