Default Oil Pump Pickup Tube (strainer) Install - 2004 Mazda 3 S

I am having trouble installing the oil pump pickup Tube on the oil pump of my 2004 Mazda 3 S. I have the original gasket and a new gasket. They are not true O-rings. The cross section is taller than the width at the CL. The pickup tube has a shallow recess that I assume is for the gasket to fit in, but the gaskets I have don't fit the recess particularly well (including the original I removes with the tube). Is there a method for insuring the gasket is properly located? I tried to stick it in place with grease while I tighten the bolts, but I am not confident it stayed put. The tube is flat against the oil pump and nothing is hanging out, but I don't want there to be any leaks. Any clues on what I should be doing are appreciated.
