Default Oil Pump Pickup Installation - 2004 Mazda 3 2.3L

I am worried about how I installed the oil pump pickup tube to my 2004 Mazda 2.3L oil pump. The pickup has a recessed groove that looks like it is for a regular o-ring. The actual gasket that was there when I removed the pickup was not a regular o-ring it was more like a rubber sleeve that was taller than than the thickness of the torrid. This gasket (?) didn't stay in the groove in the pickup unless I used a little grease to hold it in place. I am worried I have the wrong gasket for this application and that I need to take it back apart and install a proper size O-ring instead. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone that has experience with replacing a 2004 Mazda 3 2.3L Oil Pump.
