10-40? Way too thick. The manual (page 8-18) lists 5w20 or 5w30 as being acceptable. Much info out there suggestive that 5w20 is chosen only to marginally boost EPA MPG data, and is not a good choice to help the engine last.
Agreed. With a stock engine that's designed and built to run 5w oil, the bearing clearance may be such that 10wwill not flow as well or as quickly as it should to protect the engine during start-ups and under heavy loads.
5w-20 or 5w-30 doesn't really matter too much from what I've read, though if in a hot climate, 5w-30 would be a good choice imo. That's why I run it.

I bet some quickie lube would say you need 5w30 when, on the M3's, the oil cap says 5w20.

Either way it won't hurt. You'd still be running the 5w oil the engine requires. But, if you live in a hot climate, which you don't (Canada) but I do (Texas,) the 5w-30 is a good idea for better hot running protection.

I am not a fan of 5w20, because of many articles I have read, like this one: http://bestsyntheticoil.com/dealers/...w20-cafe.shtml

Yeah. UBM. That is a good read. You posted somewhere else I think on a different thread, but still a good read.

I edited that last one for you V!.

No offence intended. Texas, eh. Yep, hot there.

Maybe that's what I have to do to get rid of that annoying engine tick at cold start up. Use 5w30 instead of 5w20. Maybe the oil is drying up by the time I restart the car. (12 hours or more) Damn annoying tick anyway. However, the dealer won't do anything, and I ain't going to start a new thread on that one again. But, the edit part was another Bush/Oil joke that might offend some American users.....[]

It's still a 5 weight oil you'd be running. The 30 only means that it's modifier give the oil base ahigher resistance to heat, orthe thicker (viscosity)it will stay when heated up. 5w-30 will therefore withstand higher temperatures better than 5w-20, while appearing the same to your engine bearings, rings, etc. However, they both start out as a 5w base.
If I have interpreted the literature correctly, there should be no difference between the two during start ups.
