Mazda3 - Air Conditioning - Stopped Working

Mazda 3 AC problem
Hello everyone. I seem to have some issues with my 2004 Mazda 3 as well. The ambers light on the AC button doesn't stay lit unless you have it on selection 2 or 3 for air speed. On high (4), you have to push the **** in very hard for it to turn amber again. You can feel the difference in air temperature as well (obviously) when the amber light is illuminated, so I know the AC works (albeit, not very cool). Is this just an electrical connection issue? Seems kind of flaky that it goes on and off whenever it feels like it.

Get it checked asap
I have a 2004 Mazda 3 and about a month ago, I was hving the same problems. I would have to manually push the light on because it would flicker off. The air would blow cool still and work but only with this light on. I would be driving and noticing that I was getting hot..to look down and have the light off. I would have to turn it back on..it was a vicious cycle. So then..I was sitting in my car one day and all of a sudden I heard a grinding noise for a cpl seconds and then it went away. As I started driving..I noticed my car A/C went completely OUT. The light would no longer come on when pushed manually and the a/c blew hot. I live in Phoenix Arizona and I have been suffering ever since. I took it to Pep Boys and they said I have no leaks and everything is ok per the AC check and they said that IT IS ELECTRICAL. They said something about the clutch not functioning etc. and they want to charge me $154 just to figure out what electrical component to fix...They said it could be a short they need to fix or the compressor. So im looking to pay $600-1000 if I stick with them. So Im in the process of finding a family mechanic that will be honest, wont screw me over, and give me a good deal. I am a recent college grad and really cant afford the expense. I work 35-40 miles from home and go in to work hot AND sweaty (at 9am in the morning)! I have to chug bottled water and bring my bath and body works spray LOL. PLEASE TAKE MY ADVICE..GET IT LOOKED AT SO U ARENT SOCKING HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS AWAY IN AN UNNECESSARY EXPENSE THAT COULD BE AVOIDED.
