Gas Octane Vs. PoWeR!??
Hi Guys, i have a question......
I was reading my owner's manual (yes, i was that bored ) and i read that they recomend the lowest octane i think it was 87 octane fuel so that kept going around in my head, a couple of days ago i saw on speed tv a report about how some cars obtain more power out of lower octane fuel and that they dont perform sa well with higher octane fuel. I really dont notice a difference either in power or fuel consumption....... my question comes because when i had my Civic, it performed better on higher octane fuel and it gave me more milage....... just wanted to know what u guys think or know

Keep one thing in mind about octane. The higher the octane rating the greater the resistance to combust or explode in your combustion chamber. Higher octane does not clean better or give you more power or any other myth out on the market. It is simply formulated to be harder for the spark to ignite. This is great if your car has a pre-detonation or pinging problem because you can switch to a higher octane fuel and pinging will probably go away. If your vehicle can run on 87 octane and not ping excessively ( an occasional pinging is not abnormal ) then use it. It is not only cheaper but you may even get better mileage due to the ease of engine combustion. Your Honda probably loved higher octane because they are very prone to pinging. If your owners manual calls for higher octane then go with what is recomended. If not go with the cheap stuff.

Lupae3s, how many mils do you get out of a single tank, cause for some reason i see my self filling up my tank every 280 to 325 miles, and thats keeping in mind that i dont over acelerate or nothing like that!

I thought about this also. I used 91 octane for the first 7K miles until gas got to about $2.50 When I went to 87 I noticed about a 2 HP increase and a faster take off. All around I noticed a diffrence. Wierd but true. I also noticed that if you dont put the exact amount of oil recommended in the book it will sputter and decrease HP. Especially at take off.
