Default New member, New (6 years old) Mazda 2 just bought. OBD2 reader question.

Hi to you all. I've been wanting to buy a Mazda 2 for a while. I picked up ours 2 days ago. A 2019 Mazda 2 GT Sport Nav +. I'm new to this forum, but not new to engineering. I have obtained a workshop manual, and been reading about battery disconnection/changing. It appears that the sensor attached to the battery negative terminal monitors voltage, current and temperature data, that is recorded in the Power Control Module (PCM), (Engine ECU if you like). If you intend to disconnect the battery for any reason you need to record the current data in the PCM, then reinstall this data when the battery is reconnected, as it losses this data on battery disconnection. To this end you need a OBD2 code reader. Is there any recommended code reader for this. There are a lot of cheap ones available, but I know some are good and some not so good. I'm less worried about price, more about easily doing a reliable correct job. Thanks In Advance.

You wont need a scan tool, just the instructions for resetting i-stop.

Yes, that's what Googles AI seemed to be saying. Not sure if I believe that or not. Does that work the same for a new battery? How does the PCM know that you've fitted a new battery? There seem to be a number of scan tools available, and Google AI is saying buy one that does "battery management system reset, or battery registration"

Welcome to the forum

For advanced DIY you should invest in a high quality and Professional Diagnostic scanner.
I never recommend any of the blue tooth scanners most are flooded with information that even an experienced DIY do not know how to read let alone use and makes simple scanning for problems more challenging. (confusing).
Sorry I don't have a recommendation based on your exact criterion. I carry and inexpensive Amazon scanner for quick information in the 2 of 3 basic areas of the ECU. Anything more complex I use my Snap-On Solos.
As for changing the battery it not difficult and as Grim_reaper stated follow the owner's manual re-setting iStop or get the exact procedure from a Mazda factory service manual .

Thanks. It looks like there are a fair few on the market. And I will be able to get one that does the battery reset if it is needed. I'm cautious just now, as I've no experience with this new car, and don't want to fry or brick anything due to a simple thing like a battery change.

Being careful and cautious is a good thing !!!!

To many DIY botch things up and then in the end cost them more time and $$$
