Default Labour time on replacing steering rack

Hello,

my car is a Mazda 2 sport 2008. I think my steering rack might be on its way out?! Slight knocking noise when moving the steering wheel left and right when stationary. Can’t hear anything when going along.

i will double check other components first, but what is the estimated labour time to replace a rack on this car as I know many cars are different, some needing to drop gear boxes and stuff! If it’s a mad amount it could be goodbye for the car!

many thanks

Is your chassis DE or DY?

Common issue is the steering column lower section.

Hi Grimreaper,

It is DE I believe.

Ah, interesting, I’m guessing that’s a more straight forward fix if it is not the whole rack itself?

There is a Bulletin fix where you remove this lower section, slide the two halves apart, clean the splines, lube it with extremely expensive orange grease & reassemble.

Thanks! I will have a look at that.

regarding if it needed to be replaced, what is the name of the part? I’m seeing a lot of names floating around on Google pointing to the same part. I tried having a look on autodoc, but not sure I’m using the correct name for the part

Hi Grimreaper,

Do you know the torque specs for the lower pinch bolt by any chance? Had a google but struggling to find anything!

Many thanks
