Default How to fix rack & pinion leaking, from my experience

If you own an old car like me, you might want to check if your car is having a rack & pinion leak. So here are some indications to look out for, and how to fix it, based on my experience.

Symptoms of a rack & pinion leak
1. The steering wheel is difficult to turn
A heavier steering wheel can be an indicator of rack & pinion leakage. You'll have unassisted steering when your hydraulic steering systems don't have enough oil. Pressure is required to circulate oil in this kind of hydraulic system. When there's a leak, the pressure is gone for good.

2. Grinding sound
The leak could be depriving the gear of the oil it requires for lubrication. Therefore,
grinding sounds originating from the pinion gears are another sign of rack & pinion leakage.

3. Steering wheel is out of center
The steering wheel is supposed to return to its default center position as the automobile is moving ahead if the rack & pinion is working properly.

How do you fix rack & pinion leakage?
Fixing a rack & pinion leak is, in most cases, fairly costly. This is because locating the seal or leaking gasket is quite a hassle. It is necessary to disassemble your steering system & trace the oil's journey, as well as inspect each and every gasket. The gasket may not appear to be cracked, but it nevertheless leaks for unknown reasons.

To that end, you might want to seek help from a specialist. This repair can be done at home by some skilled amateur technicians, but it takes a long time. It's possible that hydraulic lifter will be required to gain sufficient access to your rack & pinion.

Also, if you want to save time, replacing your entire rack & pinion can be a frequent solution to prevent leaking.
