Question 2004 Mazda 2 stereo head unit

The (green) LED display is so hazy/faded or something, that it is unreadable in the daytime. Still a bit readable at night when it is back-lit, but really need to squint at the numbers to see them in the day time. Is this a regular fault in these cars? I would like to put an aftermarket head unit in but the dash facia is very integrated with the radio unit. Is there a modified version of the facia to accommodate an aftermarket radio head unit? I guess I'll have to just ignore the steering wheel controls but that will have to be the trade-off to get a unit that has Bluetooth connectivity and a readable display.
