Default OBD2 ELM327 not working on Mazda Tribute 2001 V6 3.0L

I bought a cheap eBay OBD2 tool with the ELM327 chip (v1.4 or 1.5). I connected it to the port and paired it with my phone but none of the apps I tried could communicate with the engine. I tried it with the ignition on and engine off and the engine on.

Apps I tried were (android): Torque (free), OBD Car Doctor (free), ScanMaster

All tried auto scanning for the appropriate protocol but couldn't establish comms.

Can anyone provide any help on this please?

Cheers

You didn't say if the car connects to another scanner or not. If you've never tried, take it to Autozone (or similar) and get a free scan. If they cannot connect to your car, then look for an open fuse that prevents voltage at the OBDII connector. If the Autozone scanner connects, then investigate the aftermarket solutions instead.

I read that the cheap Chinese ones from eBay are really buggy and to stay away from them. You should pay at least 75$ to get a good one.
