I just had my 2005 tribute CD4E transmission rebuilt and i had the mercon V put in. does anyone see an issue with this.

 

It is my understanding that Mazda specifies Mercon, not Mercon V. The additives and friction modifiers are different and this could damage seals and bands.

Verify that Mercon is the requirement. If this is correct change the fluid.

 

Mercon isn't a oil grade, its a brand.
Mercon V is the factory oil used & specified by Mazda & ford in the Tribute & Escape.
I just logged into the Mazda system to check.

 

Thanks, grim. I hate to give wrong advise. If Mazda says Mercon V then that is it.

However: Mercon is both, a brand and a specific formulation. There is a difference between "Mercon", "Mercon V" and "Mercon LV".


"There are several types: Dexron II, Dexron III, Type F, Mercon, Mercon V, Chrysler 7176 and several varieties of Chrysler ATF-Plus. All are "friction-modified" lubricants except Type F. Dexron II and Mercon have similar additive packages as do Dexron III and Mercon V. Even so, use only the type of ATF specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Using the wrong type of ATF can cause transmission problems."

OK no problem.

I live in a small British Commonwealth called Belize. The climate is very similar to your one in Australia. We have NO Mazda Dealerships here. As a result, since my Mazda Tribute is a USED (bought it a year ago) 3.0L V6 from 2003 I am forced to take it to a Ford dealership here.

The Ford dealership is insisting that I put a 5W-20 synthetic oil in my engine. I am worried that such a thin oil might cause a leak in our humid climate here.

I am trying to get as much information as I can in case I have to argue with the Ford dealership and stand my ground.
