Default Baaaaaaad transmission leak

I'm looking for another Tribute, and came across an 06 with 115K miles, AWD with the 2.3 four cyl. I haven't seen the truck yet as it's two hours away, but the owner said it's got a bad tranny leak- like a quart every ten miles. He says he believes it to be the input seal.

Anybody know if this is common and/or what's typically involved in repairing it? I am a bit concerned over the long term prospects as I don't know if the clutches got scorched when it ran low on fluid.

If the best plan would be to do a complete rebuild instead of just fixing the leak, what would a typical local rebuilder get for this type of transmission?

Any insight appreciated.

John

If it leaks that bad it will need a pump and torque converter bare minimum. You should figure on having to overhaul or replace the trans. Take $2k-3k off the value of the truck. Possibly more since it is AWD. Most AWD systems really suck. If you need 4wd then stick with 4wd, not AWD.

OK, now I'm not sure which system it has. I was under the impression that there was only one system available in these Tributes. I have the VIN, can I tell which system it has from that? Thanks.
