How is the oil level
this might have been part of the cause

I a. Not sure but when I can crawl underneath, I will check the level at the top plug I'm guessing? It's a manual transmission.

Do you have the same issues when the engine is running vs engine not running?

Yes. The problem exists whether the vehicle is running or not. If I can get it to go into gear (rare occurance), it goes in smooth.
