Default 2001 DC 4 cylinder manual transmission not shifting

My 2001 tribute with a manual transmission all of a sudden didnt want to go in gear. If I push or pull hard on the shifter the cable pops off. Whenever it doesnt go into gear, I turn it off, pop the hood and manually move the transmission shift lever. It seems stuck and then after I move it out is free and loose. I can get one good shift and then it wont go in again. What's the deal?

Does your clutch seem to be working ok?

Sounds like a gear selector problem if it is, thats within the trans.

Is it the same in all gears?

Yes it's in all gears. The clutch seems to feel fine. If it's the gear selector am I better off trying to find another transmission?

Probably yes, either that or you will need to find a specialist to look at the internals.

Bummer. The transmission is going to cost me more than I paid for the vehicle. What other manual transmissions will work with the 2.0? This will give me options and I will do the swap.

I may take the transmission apart and replace any broken/wire parts but I dont have a shop and will have to wait until my in laws have room for me.

Thank you for the information. Greatly appreciated.

Guess yours is 2WD in which case there are likely other boxes from the same engine range and period that would fit, maybe Ford Probe etc.

But - you’ll have to pull the trans anyway, manuals are pretty simple to work out internally, likely you have maybe a bent selector fork or perhaps even a broken spring in the selector detent mechanism that would be easy to fix and put the trans back in.

As all gears affected that would be my first guess, the trans is trying to engage two gears at once as the detent mech has a broken part...in the trans there is normally a system of plungers and springs to hold the selector shafts in position and only allow one to move at any one time...

My Tribute is actually 4 wheel drive with the option to lock the differential. I've never worked with a manual transmission before. I am very mechanically inclined however. I will look into this. Parts should be easily available I would think?

Being a 4 wheel drive, do I have other transmission options?

I was driving it home from work one day and it progressively got harder to put it into 5th gear on the highway until it just wouldn't go into any gear at the stop sign. I put it into neutral at the stop sign.

That would get tricky due to the 4WD - best to pull yours and investigate what is wrong I would think
