Default 89 gtu swap, need info!!!

Ihave a non-turbo89 rx7 gtu w/ a gxl transmition and a stage three clutch... it's time either for a rebuild, or a swap.I WILL turbo, whatever happens, it's a must. Am i better off rebuilding the stock n/a engine, setting up forturbo in the process, or doing a swap? If i do a swap, whats best... a swap for the same gen turbo engine, the 3rd gen 13btwin turbo engine, or the 3rd gen 20b (wich i've heard is very costly, but doable... i'm not feelin the cost of wich this would be from what i've heard either)

I would realy like to doa 3rd gen twin turbo swap. I've heard that i could as long as i have mounts fabbed, for they are a lil different in possition. umm... would i need to use the 3rd gen wire harness, or the 2nd gen, and what else would i basicly need to do this swap if possible?I've alsoheard it is possible to even keep the non-turbo gxl transmition as long as i keep the fly-wheel off of the 2nd gen non-turbo set up... whats the score here? whats my best option all togeather?

...Basicly should i just rebuild and set up for turbo then... should i just swap for another 2nd gen engine all-ready set up w/ turbo... or is it possible to do the 3rd gen twin-turbo swap (and keep the transmition) if i swap, what all will i need to do to complete whichever swap? i appreciate any help and wisdom i can get, i am settin this rex up for drifting and all i have left to do is rebuild or swap... thanks ; )

Wear to start. You can't do a rebuld on you NA engion so set up for a turbo. It's just not do able to to it beacuse the turbo and non turbo engions a differnt. If you do a turbo swap you will need the ecu, wiering harnas, rive train, and hoodoff of the car you get the turbo from. The NA ecu just can't handle the turbo nither can the drive train. Most of the time this option will run somewere around 3-5k after you have it all done. Doing a 3rd gen swap is proble not the best thing to do. You do know that the twin tubo set up from the 3rd gen had close to 70 different vac lines in it. Pluse keeping it all stock you only going to get like 50hp differnt in the two differnt engions. Your best bet would be to do the turbo swap and have it brigde ported or something. And yes when people say the 20B swap will cost 30k they mean it, and they know cause they've done it or priced it. There is one shop in Florda, they do the swap for around 32k I think. Hope this helpd.

Not exactly true. There are a few guys on other Forums that have Turbo'd their NA motors with good results. It is recommended not to go that route sometimes because it is more affordable to just swap in the T2 drivetrain.

thanks alot, i did way more research, and found that i could drop in the 3rd gen motor fairly easy through various companies who make special parts for the swap... but i am going to put alot of aftermarket applications on. so theres realy no point in waistin the extra cash w/ the 3rd gen from all that i found out... the later modelt2 is goin in. they have a lil more umph than the earlier fc's
