WTF about EGR ??
I'm at wits end. I need to replace the EGR valve on my 2002 P5. The Mazda parts catalog lists the part # as FSY1-20-300U. So far I've bought two of these and neither one fits; the bolt holes are almost 1/4 inch off and the electrical connector is too big for the socket. Can anyone shed some light here ?
Mazda Tech Center is supossed to call me tomorrow with some info. My P5 has the original engine. Even the factory parts catalog lists that part number as correct, but it can't be.
I did a bit of research and discovered what's happening. Halfway through 2002 production, Mazda made some mechanical and exterior changes to the Protege5. One of them was changing to a different throttle body.
It is likely that the part number Fsy1-20-300 fits the earlier version. That VIN runs up to the last five digits ending in 593887. From 593888 and on, its the 2002.5 modified version.
I'm really surprised there wasn't a TSB about this change.

TSB are not for reporting mid model changes. The main purpose of a TSB is documenting repeated problems and solutions. However in many cases unless the numbers by how many vehicles were manufactured or a safety issue indicated a problem many times minor changes like the one you found having to do with a single part would not be a definition of a TSB.
I can't tell you and I am sure other Techs and mechanic can testify looking for a known repeated problem having to do with a specif platform and model and wondering why no TSB?
Your problem IMHO without looking into it has more to do with the electronic cataloging having no updates related to the mid model production changes?

Are you buying genuine Mazda parts from the dealership?
IMHO the better question would have been to ask what brand and perhaps the part number of the brand?
RockAuto catalog is pretty good on showing parts for mid-model changes - at least for my 98 protege - they did that that year as well. Of course they're still not always correct and their descriptions sometimes are unintelligible.
This is also another reason why Rock Auto no longer has a direct customer service line for part application inquiries.
