Default Transmission 98 Protege ES

I have an automatic 98 protege ES. I burnt out 1 transmission and I am getting the same problem with a used transmission I purchased a few months ago.
I would like to see if anyone has ideas what is happenning so I don't burn this one out. Both problems started with the occasional drop in revs from 3,000RPM suddenly down to 2,000RPM whenever I accelerated. If I held steady at 2,000RPM I was okay. Then they bothstarted every now and then to flash o/d off o/d on and the revs would go crazy. After a while the 1st. tranny just burnt out.
It seems strange that I got two bad trannies acting exactly the same, or could it be something outside the tranny that is causing this. Any help would be appreciated.

First of all, was the second tranny new, used, or rebuilt? Who put the in the second tranny. If it is a shop, bring it back to them. If the OD light is flashing, get the code read. That will point to the root of the issue.

The transmission is used with supposingly 55k on it. I have just driven it to the shop that did the replacement who told me that the computer would store a code even if the problem was intermitant. Well this morning it is okay and they found no code so they tell me they can't help, only to tell me these transmissions go all the time and I am to bring it back when it is playing up. Well this could be anytime and the next time could be the time like before when I get stuck and end up blowing the tranny.
SoI'm mostly wondering two things.; is there a way to assess the problem without a code and could it be something outside the tranny. I appreciate you trying to help.

There are a number of electrical connections that could be dirty, causing an intermittent problem. Some are under the battery. Check all the wire harness' going to the tranny. Also, check all your grounds.

Do you have the tranny fluid changed yearly. Professionally, at a shop that also flushes the torque converter. When you do, have them throw some extra magnets in the pan to catch the metal filings.

Wish I had more help for you, but these tranny's are complicated. The shop manual has over 100 pages just on the transmission electrics.
