is there a better transmission? (2000 DX)
Hi everyone, I was wondering if there is a more performance transmission that was bolt on for the same engine type as the original. I recently purchased this vehicle and it won't shift into reverse, and from what I understand needs to be replaced or rebuild, which is a little pricey anyway, so why not get one built a little better

dogbox tranny but thats about as good as it gets and is only recommended for drag cars if you have an auto then a 5 speed manual but if thats the case its a ton of work to swap from an auto to manual but requires alot more money than to just change out the tranny to another stock one. cause there are sensors and you need to run the clutch through the firewall and change out the shifter its easier said than done. but there are companies that will rebuild auto's to be stronger. i had the auto tranny is my genesis built and the tranny will now handle 600 whp. so i guess a better question is what tranny is in your car right now? auto or standard lol

its a 5 speed Manual transmission...I can't stand driving automatics since I have ADHD and the shifter helps me maintain focus lol.
Yeah...its been recommended to me to check the cabling incase the reverse cable just isn't hooked up...I don't really know where to look or anything though so meh

Now that we know you have a manual transmission I would say the likelihood of there being an actual problem with the transmission are extremely low; far more likely a linkage issue of some sort. This may well be a case were taking it to a professional will be the cheapest/best solution for you.

I would first check the shift linkages. Is there a lot of play at the shifter? Is there resistance when shifting?
If so the bushings may be worn out resulting in extra play and possibly failure to push it into gear.
If there is resistance the bushings may be gummed up with dirt.
I didn't see any shift cables on my '98 5 speed, only shift rods.
In either case I would spray the linkages with silicone while partner shifts the gears. Of course on jack stands with the engine off.
I would replace the bushings before yanking the trans axle.
Good luck!
