Default replaced and reset ecu, 1999 mazda 323 protege

Hi, I just bought a 1999 mazda 323 protege that turns over but doesn't start. The previous owner bought a new ecu for it because they were told by their mechanic that it had to be replaced. I bought the car before they installed it and then installed it and reset it myself. The car still turns over but wont start. I've checked all the wiring and sensors and fixed a grounding issue. Since then the car has started once and ran for a few seconds, then cutout and hasn't started since. I believe the issue may be that I replaced the ecu but not the immobilser because the warning light originally came on then went out, then it was flashing 6-7 times before turning off and now it just stays on????????
