Default Q: Rattle noise when engine is cold

Hi all,
I have a concern with my Protege. I bought this car to a Mazda Dealer on Nov'2004 (35K mi):

Mazda Protege 2002 LX 2.0 Auto.

It is almost 66K mi today.

From the beginning driving the car, I felt something weird. When the engine is cold, I can hear a little rattle when I push the accelerator. This rattle stop when the engine raise normal temperature. I went to the Dealer (two weeks after) and the Mechanic could not find anything abnormal, but he does not test the car with the engine cold (I think simply they ignore my comments). I did perform the 30K maintenance schedule in the Mazda Dealer with almost 40K miles, and the issue was the same.

After all this time using the car, the car does not run as smooth as in the beginning. It is a little rough when I have the accelerator pushed (at idle time does not feel anything abnormal) ... and still having the issue when the engine is cold.

I thought may be it is normal in this car and I tried to live with it, but few weeks ago it starts having a Dashboard vibration noise when I push the accelerator (specifically when the engine raise the higest RPM before next shift). I think the vibration could be worst in the future, and I do not know if the engine is having problem and it become in a expensive repair.

I drove another Protege with the same engine, same year, and it does not have same behavior.

MazdaUSA.com does not show any recall on this car.

Do you have any clue about this issue?

Any advice would be really appreciated.

Manuel

Not sure about the vibration from dash but the rattle noise is very common. Below is a little info about it. See if it sounds like it may apply to you. This is a Mazda TSB #01-004/03. The dealer should be aware of it. Has been out for years.

01-004/03 2001-2003 PROTEGE/PROTEGE5 - RATTLING NOISE AT 1000-3000 RPM COLD ENGINE
APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS
2001-2003 Protege (2.0L FS only)

2002-2003 Protege5

DESCRIPTION
Some customers may experience an engine rattle noise under light to moderate acceleration with engine coolant temperatures below 65 C (149 F) and engine RPMs between 1000 and 2900 RPM.

The noise is the result of the intentional swirl effect that is generated when the Variable Tumble Control System (VTCS) plates in the intake manifold are closed. Swirl accelerates the burn of the air/fuel mixture which reduces emissions when the engine is cold. The noise does not have a negative effect on the engine, and disappears as soon as coolant temperature reaches 65 C (149 F). There is a counter-measure to help reduce the noise in order to improve customer satisfaction.

Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using one of the following procedures:

REPAIR PROCEDURE
Verify customer concern.

Check vehicle VIN range:
From VIN JM1BJ2***1*400001 to JM1BJ2***2*551281, go to step 3.
From VIN JM1BJ2***2*551282 to JM1BJ2***3*644493, go to step 4.

Replace the VTCS delay valve, then proceed to step 4.

Reprogram the PCM using WDS (Version B22 or later), verify the correct calibration
