Protege tranmission fault codes P0733 & P0767
Welcome to my newbe post!
I have an automatic 2002 Protege 5 with 66,000 miles that will not shift to 3rd or 4th gear.
My Mazda dealership has found the following codes:
P0733: Improper ratio for 3rd gear
P0767: Shift soleniod D stuck on
They have reset the codes but the problem remains and they are advising that it is an internal issue with the transmission and are recommending a transmission replacement.
I have had the car since new and have had no tranny issues until now.
Any further insight would be welcome.

For some reason they are always quick to recommend replacing a really expensive thing. Have you tried searching google for the codes and how to fix them? Don´t limit yourself to mazda protege. Find the type of transmission in your car and google for that as well. It may only require a fix for the solenoid. I think it is worthwhile to use Lucas Oil Transmission Fix. If it doesn´t work you are out only a few bucks.
Definitely, get a second opinion from a reputable transmission shop.

Thanks for responding.
I did take it to a well established (since 1973) independent transmission shop to get a second opinion. They pulled the same codes for free that the Mazda dealership charged me $120 to do and got the P0733 code but not the P0676. They hooked it up to a hydraulic test machine to verify what the tranny was doing and confirmed that it had hydraulic pressure, indicating that the signal to shift was being sent, but the gears were not shifting indeed indicating some sort of internal tranny issue.
Nobody rebuilds this model Mazda transmission. Three shops recommended a Mazda rebuilt replacement. So, at 66,000 one owner adult driven well maintained miles I will be getting to put in a $3500 replacement transmission.
I sure hope the much vaunted "Mazda reliability" shifts in because I will now be driving the car until the wheels come off!
