Default Oil in my engine coolant

There is a thin film of oil on the top of my engine coolant that is making my coolant resevior black and oily. Can't find where it could be leaking from. Usually you find water in your oil and not oil in your water. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Stumped! I have a 2003 Protege 5.

My guess would be a head gasket....have you done a compression check on the motor?

Are you getting any smoke while running.

No smoke coming out and the compression was pretty much the same across all the cylinders. When we changed the timing belt we did have a hard time sitting the crank shaft seal but I can't see how that would leak oil into coolant.

get your head gasket checked ive done a car with a cracked head gasket and it had almost perfect compression it was about 3-4 psi's off if thats not it check to see how level your head on your engine is like where your cam gears, shafts, valve springs all sit if that is even a hairline off that could be your problem.
