Default Newbi needs help bad catalytic converter.

Hi I am a new member, just posted in new member forum here, anyways as I posted in that thread i just recently purchased an 03 mazdaspeed protege, the engine light is coming on and diagnosis shows that the cat is bad, I called the mazda dealer to be blown out of my seat when he said the converter was $1000 bucks, please help I need another option, was looking in Summitt Racing cataloge and can get a Magnaflow high flow converter for $75 it is universal fit. being a certified welded I can put it on myself I just am not sure how sensitive these cars are to exhaust mods.

Take it to Midas or any local muffler shop. They can fix it for you or if it's something you want to tackle yourself, ROCKAUTO.COM has replacement cats for under $300

yeah take it to a local muffler shop or check out that site but a universal will not fit because mazda made the cat converters a certain way so you have to buy there replacement honda also did this, you can move it back a bit but with the sensor if its to far away from the manifold you might be still throwing codes so. just look at that site i know from a local muffler shop i can get one for $499

If you are saying the fittment is an issue i,ve already measured the one on my car, and it is almost identical to the "round" universal fit converter that magnaflow offers, if it is made of something different inside that will cause it not to work right or give my system a "False" reading, that is what I am curious about.

yeah im not to sure i took mine to preformance plus muffler shop where i live and the guy told me that he can put a universal one in but he has to move the sensor back and thats going to throw codes like if the code isn't a problem then yeah it will work but i can't have mine throwing codes thats why i recommend geting the right one cause im trying to sell that piece of crap i own honestly its been a problem since day 1 ive proubly dumped more money into fixing it then whats its even worth.
