Default P0170 Check Engine Light Code

Hello All,

1997 Mazda Protoge. Chek Engine Light ON. Code P0170 according to the scanner. Symptoms: After driving the car at approx. 120 km/h for 1/2 hour, car has difficulty starting after a 5-10 min. cooling period. Mechanic suggested replacing the engine coolant sensor near the distributor. O2 sensor was replaced 6 weeks ago. New dist. cap, rotor, spark plugs and wires.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
klakha

a code p0170 is a fuel trim malfuction, this could be caused by the fuel running to rich. were both 02's replaced or just one?

Only one o2 sensor was replaced. The one located at the top of the intake manifold.

Just changed the coolant sensor. Also noticed a crack in the plastic air intake pipe just past the MAF sensor. Fixed the crack. Ran the car till the temp. gauge was half way and shut down engine for 10 min. Restarted car, put it in drive and felt hesitation. Car did not want to accelarate. Eventually, engine kicked in and slowly the car started to respond. Hopefully tomorrow, the car will start to respond and the problem will have been solved. Any other ideas as to why and what else could be causing this problem? What have I missed?

Thank you.

My advice would be to change the hose, There are more than one crack.......and the tape can get sucked into the engine.....can cause a world of trouble. The hose is inexpensive and can be obtained at your mazda dealer

Default p0170

My '97 Protege will throw this code when I fill'er up with 87 octane. As soon as I fill up with 89 octane or higher the code immiediately goes away. Any thoughts spring to mind?
